Chris Smart and Esther Hamill were fastest male and female riders respectively at the Emergency Services 10-Mile Championships in North Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon.
Smart (Scottish Fire and Rescue Service) covered the rolling T103 course near North Cowton in a time of 20-27 to take the win by 35 seconds from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service rival Terry Wilkinson, while another 13 seconds back was Humberside Fire Service rider Anthony Snow in third spot.
The only woman to compete, Esther Hamill took the women’s title for Police Scotland in a time of 30-08.
It was a dry but blustery day for the event on a rolling course with a strong headwind on the way out, but it didn’t seem to both Chris Smart, who has been in great form recently and successfully defended his title from last year.
Winners in Saturday’s 10-mile event, Smart and Hamill both went on to win the 25-mile titles on Sunday too to make it a weekend to remember.
Smart is next due to be in action at next Sunday’s National 100-Mile Championship, while Hamill hasn’t entered any more open time trials until next month’s Border City Wheelers 10 and 25 in Cumbria.
