Lee Cuthbertson and Sarah Wilkinson were deserved winners at a brutal windy Edmundbyers climb, staged by Team Kirkley Cycles on Sunday morning.
The 2.5-mile climb to Muggleswick Common in County Durham was somewhat bracing, and all riders did well to finish the iconic climb.
Cuthbertson (Muckle CC) proved quickest in 13-45.9, which gave him the overall victory by around seven seconds from GS Metro rival Alexander Storey, while third was Freddie Jagger (Team Lifting Gear Products) who was about 45 seconds off Cuthbertson’s impressive pace.
And in the women’s category, Blaydon CC rider Wilkinson ascended the climb in 17-17.0 which gave her the win by almost two minutes from Musselburgh RCC’s Madeline Bell, with third place being taken by Lois Jarvis of Muckle CC who was another 14 seconds off the pace set by Wilkinson.
This was Cuthbertson’s first win of the season so far, having put in several strong performances in other events. He was fourth in the tough Cestria CC Peth Bank climb on Saturday, and earlier in the season places second at Blaydon CC’s 23-mile time trial in August.
Wilkinson’s win was her second of the weekend, having also been fastest female in Saturday’s Cestria CC event where she again beat Bell into second.
Next weekend Cuthbertson has not entered any open events, but he is due to ride the Muckle CC climb of Prospect Hill, before tackling the National Championships the week after that.
Meanwhile Wilkinson rides the Houghton CC Quarrington Hill climb next Sunday, before taking on the Muckle CC event on October 23 and then heading to South Wales for the National Championships on the Old Horseshoe Pass.
