Sarah Wilkinson and Lewis Timmins were fastest female and male respectively at the Derwentside CC 9.9-mile time trial on a picturesque course in County Durham on Sunday.
Timmins covered the course starting near Edmundbyers in 23-10 to take overall victory by 29 seconds from Daniel Kane (Muckle CC), while Peter Stokoe (Reifen Racing) was third, 43 seconds behind Timmins.
Wilkinson (Blaydon CC) clocked 26-41 to win the women’s event by almost two minutes from Vicky Gibbs (Reifen Racing), while Adele McAleer (Velo Culture) was third.
Light traffic, warm weather and clear skies made for a glorious day – particularly so for those on a bike, which included 84-year-old Ronnie Thompson (Derwentside CC) who is pictured in the background of the photo of Lewis Timmins.
The aged rider regularly attends both open and club time trials, both as a rider as well as a marshal, and used his experience to clock an impressive time of 40-07.
Afterwards, Timmins said: “It was nice to win a Derwentside CC event again as it was here that I got my first ever open win in 2018. It’s the best 10 course around here and there’s always an excellent atmosphere post-race.”
And women’s winner Wilkinson said: “I found it tough today, probably due to setting off quite hard. I thought I might have sneaked a course pb but was slightly held up by a tractor so missed out by three seconds. But I enjoyed the lovely weather, so no real complaints.”
Fastest on a road bike was James Corfield of GS Metro who has recently returned to time trialling. James completed the course in 24:53 for eighth place overall.
In the female road bike competition Adele McAleer was fastest in 29:20. The road bike competition in the North East District is going from strength to strength.
