Lewis Timmins (Vector Racing) was the fastest male in the Velo Culture 13-mile time trial in Northumberland, while Alexandra Noonan of Sun City Tri was quickest in the women’s event.
On a blustery but dry day scratch-man Lewis Timmins came through with a time of 27:59 to win the first ever Mark Strang Memorial time trial.
In second place was Matty Smith (Muckle CC) who rode a 29:11, while taking the final podium spot was Phil Hall of the promoting club who finished in 29:20.
It was the first open win of the season for Timmins, who said: “I’m happy to finally pick up my first open win this year after a number of second places and I’m surprised to have gone relatively fast given the conditions today.
“It is especially nice to win the first Mark Strang Memorial race in recognition of a very popular and well-liked person who contributed enormously to the North East time trial scene.”
In the women’s event 31-year-old Alexandra Noonan was fastest, completing the 13-mile course in 34:10.
Louise Burnie (Blaydon CC) finished 34 seconds later in 34:44 and fast enough to take third place was Vicky Gibbs of Reifen Racing who set a time of 34:59.
Noonan, who was picking up her first ever time trial win, said: “I never expected to win in a million years so I was really surprised and it’s my first open time trial win. The course was really tough with strong winds but I really enjoyed it - it certainly kept your interest.”
Mark Strang was a member of the Velo Culture team but sadly passed away earlier this year. As a tribute to him the event is now named the Mark Strang Memorial time trial.
