Chris McNamara and Angela Carpenter

Christopher McNamara (Nuun-Sigma Sport-London RT) took his first VTTA National Championship title winning the men’s 50-mile event while Angela Carpenter (…a3crg) added the women’s crown to her large collection.

McNamara, aged 47, had to go close to the course record and win the overall event, hosted by Bike-Pace, to win the championship on the age group formula.

Meanwhile, Carpenter broke the women’s course record and Welsh record by almost two minutes on her way to winning the women’s title.

Not to be outdone, the Newbury Velo tandem pairing of Ian Greenstreet and Rachel Elliot won the tandem championship with a new course record and Welsh tandem 50-mile time trial record by over 20 minutes.

The R50/1B saw riders complete two laps of an out-and-back course between Abergavenny and Mitchel Troy in Monmouthshire.

The weather was dry and a light southerly wind was gusty at times despite the host of records recorded on the day.

Chris McNamara

McNamara, from Worthing in West Sussex, started as last man and was on stellar form to take a fifth open time trial victory of the season.

The 47-year-old recorded a time of one hour, 39 minutes and 54 seconds which was the fastest on the day and just 38 seconds short of Kieron Davies’ seven-year-old course record.

McNamara took the veteran national 50 championship with his time equating to a veteran standard of +37:26, VHR 1:37:08.

Keith Ainsworth (Lindsey Roads Cycling Club) was eighth on scratch in 1-49-08 with the 63-year-old taking second in the championship with a standard of +37.12, VHR 1:37:22.

Completing the men’s medal positions was David Shepherd (...a3crg) with the 61-year-old’s time of 1-47-59 giving a standard of +36:55, VHR 1:37:39.

On scratch Christopher Gibbard (Bynea Cycling Club) was second male in 1-41-22 while Anthony Jones (VMCC powered by Y Beic) was third (1-43-42).

Angela Carpenter

In the women’s event 53-year-old Carpenter was a clear winner with her time of 1-49-24 being around 13 minutes quicker than her nearest challenger on scratch and equating to a winning standard of +44.04.

A close battle behind saw Fay Barrington (Banbury Star Cyclists' Club) finish second on scratch in 2-02-36 while Maria Powell (FTP RC) was third fastest in 2-03-04.

Champion Group Team was Wessex with Carpenter and Shepherd joined by Claire Emons with the trio also taking ...a3crg to the team award both on veteran standard.

The fastest road bike on scratch was Nick Giles (Pocomotion Road Club) who just broke to two-hour barrier in 1-59.57.
