Philip Tucker

Philip Tucker brought home victory for host club Bynea CC in their season opening 10-mile event, while Amanda Lane (North Dock Dredgers) showed her speed to win the women’s event.

Tucker, aged 42, from Burry Port, clocked an impressive winning time of 20 minutes 34 seconds despite facing tough conditions.

Scratch rider Tucker won two events last season, with his last coming in June and took victory at his first attempt in 2022.

The R10/22A saw competitors start in the Vale of Neath Business Park straight into a headwind for the opening half-a-mile.

Joining the A465 riders headed south westerly to Neath with a strong tailwind blowing them towards the turn before facing a tough homeward leg back to the finish at Resolven.

Event organiser Christopher Gibbard was not in action to defend his course record of 18-56 on the out and back course.

Tucker also won the same event in March 2019 clocking 21-56 and showed his improvement to go 1-22 quicker on this occasion despite the strong wind and cold conditions.

Gerry Bowditch (Pontypool RCC) won the previous weekend’s Cardiff 100 Miles RCC but had to settle for second this time out recording a time of 21-15.

A further 10 seconds behind in a close fight for the podium positions was another host club rider, Ross Hamilton, clocking 21-25 on his first open time trial outing.

In the women’s event Lane took victory on her first outing of the season recording a winning time of 26-44.

Last season veteran Lane narrowly missed out on victory in the Welsh CA 12-hour event and took fourth in the National 12-hour Championship.

On this occasion Tucker showed her speed over the shorter distance recording an average speed of 22.44 miles per hour on her way to victory.

Jennifer Aylward (Cycle Specific) finished second in 28-41 while Diane Hynam (Bynea CC) finished third (32-52).
