Ben Jones (Cycle Specific) battled to a narrow victory by nine seconds in the Cardiff 100 Miles RCC 15, while Rebecca Comins (Newport Phoenix CC) was the fastest woman.

Scratch rider Jones was without an open time trial victory coming into the event after clinching three podium positions last season.

But he started 2022 with a win, clocking 30 minutes and 44 seconds over the 15 miles which was just nine seconds faster than Nick Livermore (Bristol South Cycling Club).

Riders were greeted with sunny weather conditions for February, though the air felt rather sharper than the Met Office’s advice of 10 degrees Celsius for the event.

However, competitors did have to battle a light southerly wind which made for a crosswind on the out and back course along the A40 between Abergavenny and Raglan.

Jones finished second in the Bynea CC 25 and third places in both the Virtual Cycling Club 25 and Sportzmad 10 but took the top spot on this occasion.

Livermore rode over from Bristol to South Wales for the event and then posted a time of 30-53 which saw him take a narrow second place.

In the battle for third student Jack Kellam (Cambridge University CC) posted 31-17 which was 48 seconds quicker than Simon Adcook (Worcester St. Johns CC).

Fastest team was Port Talbot Wheelers with a team consisting of Mike Hall, Paul Colman and Les Thomas.

Meanwhile, the fastest rider on a road bike was Andrew Butcher (Cwmcarn Paragon Road Club) who recorded a time of 35-47.

The Pontypool Road Cycling Club pairing of Gerry Bowditch and Paul Hayward were the fastest two-up with a time of 32-40.

Meanwhile, the four-up competition was won by UF Rowe & King with a team consisting of Owen Burgess, Andy Davies, Luke Dix and Luke Protheroe recording a time of 32-04.

In the women’s event veteran rider Comins took her first open time trial victory of the season recording a time of 37-12.

Comins also won the St Piran / Northover Vets Team 10 (inc the Royal Navy championship) last season and was successful again on this occasion.

A close battle for second saw Lucia Borradaile (CC Weymouth) post a time of 41-08 which was 13 seconds faster than Hollie Labunsky (Port Talbot Whs).
