Jake Sargent

Jake Sargent (FTP (Fulfil the Potential) Race Team) smashed the course record to win the Chippenham & District Wheelers 22, while team-mate Jo Buckland was the women’s victor.

Sargent, aged 22 and from Bristol, won seven races last season and opened his open time trial account for 2022 with an impressive ride clocking 49 minutes and 15 seconds over the 22-mile course - taking over two and a half minutes off the previous course record.

The Chippenham & District Wheelers 22 saw riders start from near Tormarton before heading south through the finish and turning east at Marshfield.

Competitors then joined the A420 towards Chippenham before turning back north-westerly onto the B4039 passing the Castle Combe Circuit, turning at Acton Turnville back past the start and to the finish.

Organisers had been worried about the winter weather having moved the event forward from its March date to February.

However, competitors were treated to a sunny day with fair wind conditions.

Jo Buckland

Sargent won a host of events last season and finished second in the Welsh CA Championships over 50 miles.

Showing his early season form he finished well ahead of the pack headed by James Pittard (Didcot Phoenix CC) whose time of 52-18 was enough for second 13 seconds quicker than Jack Kellam (Cambridge University CC).

Simon Smith (TY Cycles) was quickest veteran on scratch finishing fourth in 55-18 while fastest junior was Lawrence Martindale (Chippenham & District Wheelers) who completed the course in 58-35.

Quickest veteran on standard was Karl Norris (360VRT) with his time of 56-08 equating to a standard of +12.02.

In the women’s event Buckland, from Malmesbury, took her first victory of the season in emphatic style posting a winning time of 1-03-53.

Leading the chase behind was Isabella McNally (Westbury Wheelers) taking second in 1-08-25 while Marianne Carpenter (Bath Cycling Club) finished third on her first open outing stopping the clock in 1-12-31.

On a successful day for FTP (Fulfil the Potential) Race Team the wins of Sargent and Buckland also led them to team honours alongside Josh Griffiths with the trio making a combined time of 2-49-17.
