Rivett and Caplan triumph at Wessex 50
Andrew Rivett (Velo Club St Raphael) and Emma Caplan (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) were fastest man and woman respectively in the Wessex Road Club 50-mile time trial on Sunday morning.
50-year-old Rivett finished in 1:48:05, which was significantly quicker than his veteran target of 2:14:30.
In second place was the winner of the best newcomer award, Tom Clements (Wessex RC) who was riding his first 50 who clocked a time of 1:51:08. Third place was a fellow Wessex RC rider – Darren Orchard who clocked 1:52:05. A time over two minutes quicker than his last time on this course three years ago.
Rivett had competed in five open time trials so far this season prior to this event, finishing on the podium in two of them, the most recent of which being the Poole Wheelers CC 25 at the end of May.
In the women’s event Emma Caplan was unrivalled, though she still rode an impressive 2:10:36 to show she was worthy of the win.
Caplan had only previously participated in two open CTT events, the first of which she finished second at the Bournemouth Arrow CC 10. This was her first recorded 50, which not only gives her a first victory over the distance but also sets a new personal best.
VC St Raphael took the team award led by Rivett, while in other categories the best newcomer and best improver were won by second and third place Clements and Orchard.
