Alex Morrice earned a stunning victory as fastest woman while Harry McFarlane set a course record as fastest male at the Leith hill climb run by Kingston Wheelers on Sunday morning.

University of Bath rider Morrice completed the climb in 4-16-00 to narrowly beat reigning national hill climb champion Bithja Jones (Pankhurst Cycles) who clocked 4-16-10 with Parlay CC’s Leonie Harper who took the final podium spot in 4-22-40.

Morrice will take confidence from defeating Reading-based Jones, who triumphed at the 2020 and 2021 national hill climb championships despite only taking up the sport in 2019.

22-year-old Morrice has spent much of the season competing in road races, alongside four time trials that have brought victories at the Kingston Wheelers Sporting 14 on April 5, the Dursley Road Club 10 on April 23 and the Severn RC 10 on June 25.

Jones will be looking to retain her title at the National Championships in Denbighshire in October, with the Welsh roads hosting the event for the first time since 1981.

In the men’s event, McFarlane of GTFL set 3-29-40 to beat Orwell Velo’s Joshua Aiken who took second place in 3-33-20, while a time of 3-49-70 helped Leicester Forest’s Dan Taylor into third.

This event, run on the GH/42 course, starts on Etherley Hill and proceeds up Leith Hill, following Leith Hill Lane past Leith Hill Place Farm and continuing all the way to the finish line at the summit.
