Jari Verstraeten and Angela Carpenter set new male and female course records at the Southern Counties CU (Sporting Weekend) 10-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon.
Team Bottrill’s Verstraeten took 44 seconds off the eight-year-old course record on his way to first place in 20-44 ahead of Cris Coxon (Brighton Mitre CC) who was 1-47 back while Colin McDermott, from Festival RC, took third place in 23-09.
Angela Carpenter, riding for a3crg, set a new women’s course record with 24-15, an improvement of 27 seconds on the previous time from eight years ago.
Tracey Williams (Brighton Mitre CC) was the second-fastest woman in 28-57, with Horsham Cycling’s Tina Lohr claiming third in a time of 30-01.
Coxon led Brighton Mitre to the team prize alongside Williams and Jack Smith in 25-23.
Riders faced sunny weather countered by a 15mph easterly wind complete with gusts during the 10-mile course that starts in Okewood Hill before heading to Walliswood then Lockley, past Forest Green and looping back towards Okewood Hill.
Verstraeten, the 33-year-old Belgian who previously rode for Veranda's Willems Cycling Team and won the 2017 Tour of Burkina Faso, recorded victory in his first CTT event of the season.
