Richard Oakes (Team Ohten Aveas) and Deborah Moss (Springfield Financial Racing Team) were crowned VTTA National 15-mile Champions after a pair of fine performances in Cheshire.

Manchester & NW Group's organised the first VTTA national championship of 2022 over 15 miles.

Oakes, aged 53, is no stranger to picking up VTTA honours after winning titles over 10 and 25 miles last season and won the men’s event in a veteran age handicap time of 28-56.

A revised course saw riders take on a 15-mile circuit on roads between Knutsford, Holmes Chapel and Chelford with little traffic.

Times were helped by summer and warm conditions which were some of the best experienced in Cheshire so far this season.

Awards were given on the newly introduced vets’ age handicap system; actual time minus vets age handicap allowance which equalled the vets handicap result.

Oakes’ time of 30 minutes and 28 seconds was a notable effort on a circuit that is far from a drag strip and gave him an age handicap time of 28-56.

Joseph Costello (Walsall RCC) was second on handicap result with the 63-year-old’s finishing time of 33-29 reduced to a handicap time of 30-15.

Completing the men’s medal positions was Mike Twelves (Team Ohten Aveas) whose handicap time was 30-37.

Team Ohten Aveas won the team award with Oakes joined by Mike Twelves and Wayne Smith.

Oakes and Twelves also led East Midlands to the Group award, being joined by Kevin Wood (Sherwood CC) .

Meanwhile, Moss, from Wrightington in Lancashire was a clear winner by three minutes in the women’s event.

Moss had to settle for second in last year’s VTTA National 25-mile Championship but went one better to clinch the title on this occasion.

The 51-year-old clocked a time of 35-37 which was reduced to a handicap 30-30 over a minute clear of her nearest challenger.

Paula Fisher (Born to Bike) was second with the 64-year-old recording a handicap time of 33-34 just 16 seconds faster than Jan Scotchford (North Lancs RC)33-50.
