Veteran rider Tim McEvoy (FTP Fulfil the Potential Race Team) snatched victory by just 18 seconds at the Plymouth Corinthian CC 16, while Martina Geraghty (Penzance Wheelers CC) was a more convincing winner in the women’s event.
National 12-hour Champion McEvoy, from Bodmin, won four events last season and opened his account for 2022 over the 16 miles distance.
The 43-year-old covered the out and back course in a time of 37 minutes and 34 seconds.
The S46/16S course saw riders compete on the B3257 starting just off the junction with the A388 passing through Coad’s Green and over the B3254 before making a triangle turn and then the return leg.
McEvoy’s time of 37-34 was just 17 seconds quicker than fellow veteran Nigel Polkinghorne (Duchy Velo) in 37-52 while Andrew Jason (City Cycle Couriers RT) finished third (38-39).
Host club Plymouth Corinthian CC were well represented Mark Pierce in fourth, Sam Beaton in fifth and Paul Walshe taking sixth.
Quickest junior rider was Oliver Wade (Wheal Velocity) who finished eighth overall in a time of 40-41.
In the women’s event veteran rider Geraghty took her opening victory of the season clocking a time of 45-53, over a minute clear of her nearest challenger.
The 52-year-old finished third in the Exeter Whs sporting 19 the previous week but went two positions better on this occasion.
Host club Plymouth Corinthian CC dominated the remaining podium positions with Lisa Crawford taking second (47-00) and Helen Soby third (52-41).
