Patrick Casey and Hebe Picking were the junior boys’ and girls’ winners respectively at the RTTC National 10-mile Championship.

The junior boys’ competition was well fought with Casey breaking the 20-minute mark to win the event in 19 minutes and 58 seconds.

Casey, riding for Team Lifting Gear Products, was pushed all the way for victory by juvenile Harris Hall (Velo Culture) who finished just 15 seconds down in 20-13.

Meanwhile, in the junior girls’ event Picking, riding for RFDA (Racescene Female Development Accademy), won her first national title recording a time of 25-00 which was well clear of her rivals.

The national event, organised by Vive Le Velo, saw riders compete on the out and back V714 course starting near Gilberdyke, between Hull and Selby, before heading out with a westerly tailwind out to Howden on the B1230 and then making the slightly longer return journey into a headwind.

Casey showed his form by posting a 18-56 in the VTTA London & Home Counties 10 last month and was again on top form in windier conditions.

Meanwhile, Hall, who won the National Youth Championship last month, pushed his rival close but had to settle for second this time out.

Completing the junior boys’ podium was Ethan Storti (Welwyn Whs) who posted a time of 21-21 for third beating Harry Weedon (Corley Cycles RC) into fourth (21-49).

In the junior girls’ event Picking recorded an average speed of exactly 24 miles per hour on her way to victory.

Juvenile rider Abbey Thompson (Stonham Barns Park – SYRT) led the battle behind finishing second in 26-13 while Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Whs) completed the podium taking third in 27-18.

“It was really good,” said Picking.

“I was pleased to get the win and my first national title. I just went there and looked to get the power down which worked.

“I only started in 2021 so this is my second season and I’m finding the races really good fun. I’ve got some other 25-mile events to come, I’m not finished yet.”
