Chris Smart

Chris Smart (GTR-Return to Life p/b Streamline) took his second win of the weekend as he battled to victory in the Border City Wheelers 28, while Jan Scotchford (North Lancashire RC) won the women’s event.

Veteran rider Smart also won the Tyne & Wear Fire Service 12 the previous day and took his second win in as many days clocking a time of one hour, five minutes and 10 seconds on the undulating course.

The L291 course saw riders start near Dalston, south of Cumbria before heading out on the B5299 through Welton and then completing one lap of a circuit.

Riders turned onto the B5305 through Rosley and then in the interests of safety there was a slight modification to the course to eliminate the riders having to join and ride along a section of the busy A595.

The riders turned left just prior to the A595 turn and followed a lane running parallel to the A595 until they reached a T junction where they turned left back onto the original course (up Brocklebank towards Caldbeck).

The lane had a good road surface and good visibility. This alteration reduced the course from 28 to 27.1 miles.

After turning back onto the B5305 riders headed back through Sebergham and then making the return leg.

Conditions were dry with a light easterly wind and a warm temperature which helped times.

Jan Scotchford

Smart showed his form finishing over a minute clear of his nearest challenger with the battle for second led by fellow veteran David Powell (Horwich Cycling Club) in 1-06-16 while Richard Bideau (Pendle Forest CC) finished a further 13 seconds back.

Scotchford was the only women’s competitor completing the course in a winning time of 1-25-28.
