Matthew Wales

Matthew Wales (Fibrax Wrexham RC) took his first open time trial victory of the season in the SCCA & WCTTA 100, while Emma Bexson (Stratford CC) was a clear winner of the women’s event.

Taking part in his first ever open 100-mile event Wales recorded a winning time of three hours, 38 minutes and 52 seconds.

The Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association event also incorporated the West Cheshire TTCA and Manchester & District TTA 100-mile Championship.

The D100/8 saw riders start near High Ercall in Shropshire before heading down to Shawbirch and joining the A442 past Waters Upton towards Hodnet and then heading down to Shawbury to complete the loop.

Competitors completed four and a half laps to make up the 100 miles.

Wales has finished third in his other three open events this season but took the victory on this occasion.

Scratch rider Toby Williams (Velotik RT) kept pressure on Wales throughout the event but had to settle for second in 3-40-33.

Despite competing over 100 miles nothing could separate Alastair Ribbands (Congleton CC) and Benjamin Akin (Tri Central UK) with both riders finishing in 3-52-25 while Ben Goodwin (Fibrax Wrexham) was a further 33 seconds back.

Emma Bexson

Adrian Hughes (Seamons CC) finished eighth overall in 3-58-53 but was best veteran on standard with +55:55.

In the women’s event Bexson was a convincing winner with her time of four hours, 32 minutes and 18 seconds over 33 minutes clear of her nearest competitor.

Bexson, aged 47 and from Alcester, won the third round of the Merlin Cycles Classic Series on the tough Beacon RCC course and again showed her strength to take a comfortable win.

Helen Tudor (Oswestry Paragon CC) finished second in 5-05-41 while Emma Sarjeant (Hafren CC) was third (5-08-42).
