Juvenile riders Finlay Tarling (Flanders Color Galloo Team) and Mabli Phillips (Maindy Flyers Cycling Club) were the fastest boy and girl respectively at the National Youth Championship Finals over 10 miles.
Tarling, aged 15, was the only competitor to break the 20-minute barrier recording a winning time of 19 minutes and 53 seconds –an average speed of over 30.1 miles per hour.
Meanwhile, Phillips won the girls’ event stopping the clock in 24-29 to finish 18 seconds clear of her nearest competitor.
The O10/1 saw riders start near Hatfield Woodhouse before heading out and back along the undulating A614 down to Blaxton before making the return journey.
The previous day Tarling provisionally broke the juvenile competition record with a time of 18-15 at the Icknield RC 10 - knocking 40 seconds off the previous record held by his brother Joshua Tarling.
“It was definitely made much harder after my effort yesterday,” said Tarling.
“It was quite a lumpy course, so I kept a smooth rhythm. It was more of a grippy road surface and was really bumpy.
“It was good to have the chance to back up the previous day’s ride and prove that it was not lucky.”
Fellow juvenile Harris Hall (Velo Culture) led the battle behind Tarling, finishing second in the boys’ event in 20-44.
A close battle for third saw junior Theo Anderson (Chippenham & District Wheelers) finish third in 21-02 which was just a single second faster than Toby Bush (Team Bottrill) 21-03.
In the girls’ event Phillips, aged 14, recorded an average speed of over 24.5 miles per hour on her way to victory.
“It started off with quite a big head wind so it was going to be hard,” said Phillips. “But once I got around the roundabout it was alright.
“I didn’t actually realise how bumpy the road was going to be. I knew I was in with a chance of winning after finishing second last year, but you’re never sure.
“I feel like I have improved this year especially my position. I was eight seconds off my fastest 10-mile time (24-21) so hopefully I will dip under that this season.”
Fellow juvenile Ffion Hill (Towy Riders Cycle Club) pushed Phillips all the way for victory finishing 18 seconds behind in 24-47.
Completing the girls’ podium positions was Evelyn Field (Liverpool Century Cycling Academy) who stopped the clock in 25-18.
