Neal Parkin (Team Bottrill) was the fastest rider by just four seconds in the VTTA North Midland 10, while Elaine Simpson (Sherwood CC) was the quickest woman.

Parkin, aged 43, was the penultimate starter but went the fastest on the out and back Yorkshire course recording a winning time of 20 minutes and 43 seconds.

The men’s finish could not have been closer with the top six riders separated by just 36 seconds but Parkin finished top of the pile.

The event doubled up as the North Midlands Championships, with Yvonne Twelvetree (Sheffield Tri Club) being fastest female on standard with +1.18, while Keith Ainsworth (Lindsay Roads CC) was best overall with +6-54.

Gordon Wordsworth (Rutland CC) won the Ron Blythe Trophy as best over-70 in +5.02, while top tandem was the Rockingham CC pair of Ala and Andy Whitehead with +3.19.

The O10/1 saw riders start near Hatfield Woodhouse in Yorkshire before head out and back along the A614 towards Blaxton and then making the return journey.

Coming into the event Parkin was without an open victory this season with nine podium finishes but he was not to be denied this time out.

He also led Team Bottrill to the team prize alongside Julian Ramsbottom, who finished joint fourth overall, and Matthew Stonley.

Fellow veteran Darren Yarwood (Chapeau! Vive Le Velo) was cruelly denied victory finishing just four seconds down in 20-47 while Jack Brown (UpShift Nutrition RT) was third (20-58).

Quickest junior was Joseph Turnbull (Otley CC) who posted a respectable 21-23 which was just 40 seconds down on the winner.

Ian Guilor (Mapperley CC) was second veteran on standard with +6.15 while Russ Richardson (Teesdale CRC) was third (+6.12).

In the women’s event veteran rider Simpson was the quickest on scratch stopping the clock in 24-55.

She was chased home by juvenile rider Evelyn Field (Liverpool Century Cycling Academy) who finished second in 25-43.

A fight for the final podium position saw Paula Fisher post 26-17 which was just 12 seconds faster than Born to Bike – Bridgtown Cycles team-mate Gillian Campbell (26-29).
