Andrew Whiteley (Team Lifting Gear Products) was the fastest man at the Birdwell Wheelers 10-mile time trial in South Yorkshire, while Elaine Simpson (Sherwood CC) was the quickest woman.
Whiteley went off as the scratch-man and justified that position as he clocked 20:17, a time at least 40 seconds quicker than his closest competitor on a sunny afternoon with only light winds.
Second place went to John Brearley (Squadra RT) who clocked in at 21:00, and occupying the final podium spot was Daniel Barnett (Team Bottrill) who completed the course just six seconds slower in 21:06.
Whiteley’s first ride of 2022 was last weekend in the Sheffrec CC 25, where he got his season off to a winning start on similar roads around Hatfield Woodhouse. He is next scheduled to ride in the Saddleworth Clarion CC 18 where he will look to make it three out of three.
In the women’s event it was Elaine Simpson that finished quickest, the veteran clocking in at 25:34.
Second spot went to Gillian Campbell (Born to Bike - Bridgtown Cycles) who completed the ride in 26;44, while next in the women’s rankings was juvenile rider Maia Howell (Matlock CC) who set a time of 26:53.
After placing third in the Melton Olympic 10 and then second in the Matlock CC 10, Simpson has now improved to take her first victory of the season at the Birdwell Wheelers event.
Fastest rider in the road bike event was Casper Raynard (Univ of Leeds CC) who clocked 23-03 to finish just ten seconds faster than Steven Guymer (Squadra RT).
