The O25/11 course in South Yorkshire proved a happy hunting ground for Andrew Whiteley and Maria Mulleady-Kershaw, who were fastest male and female riders at Sheffrec CC’s 25-mile time trial near Hatfield Woodhouse on Saturday.
Whiteley (Team Lifting Gear Products-Cycles in Motion) clocked 52-12 to take the win by 29 seconds from Mapperley CC veteran Ian Guilor, while Neal Parkin (Team Bottrill) was third fastest, 1-29 slower than Whiteley.
And in the women’s category Mulleady-Kershaw (Trek Sheffield) covered the course in 1-06-57 to win that category by just 15 seconds from Gail Phillips (Team Sheffield).
The popular course begins to the north of Hatfield Woodhouse just before the M180, and heads up to Tudworth Interchange before turning onto the A18 eastwards. Upon reaching Ealand riders turn back west towards Tudworth and then turn south onto the A614 Bawtry Road down to Blaxton before heading back north and finishing just before Hatfield Woodhouse.
This performance was a 25-mile personal best for Whiteley in open events. The last time he rode this course was in the Sheffrec CC’s two-up in March 2020 where he teamed up with Liam Bromiley to place third in a time of 53-22.
It was his first open event of the season so far, and comes after he placed second in four events in 2021. He is next due to be in action in the Birdwell Wheelers 10 on the nearby O10, and has also entered the Saddleworth Clarion’s 18-mile event in Cheshire on May 18.
This was Mulleady-Kershaw’s second ride of the year, having been second fastest female at the Darlington CC 25 a week earlier.
