Squadra RT riders John and David Brearley claimed victory at a blustery Sheffrec CC two-up time trial on Saturday afternoon.
The brothers, 34 and 30 respectively, were fastest overall in a time of 28-22, with Team Bottrill’s Jacob Bush and Oliver Peace finishing second in 29-00 and their team-mates Neal Parkin and Daniel Barnett just four seconds behind to claim third place.
The event, usually run on the O25/11 course, was reduced from 25 miles to 13.16 due to roadworks, and the new out-and-back route leaving riders facing difficult crosswinds in both directions.
Bush and Pace were the highest-placed male junior pairing, while Toby Bush (Team Bottrill) and Matthew Kent (Beeston Cycling Club) finishing first in the male juvenile category.
Parkin and Barnett took the honours in the male veteran category, with Daryl May and Adam Machan, of host club Sheffrec CC, second in 31:56.
The fastest mixed team were Sarah Lewthwaite (Born to Bike – Bridgtown Cycles) and Matthew Asquith (Team Sportslab) in 32:59, and Born to Bike – Bridgtown Cycles pair Paula Fisher and Karen Brooks finished as the first female team in 40:12.
On their victory, John said: “It was the first race of the season for both of us so it was good to get started again – particularly with a victory.
The family connection paid off for sure, as we usually ride really well together.”
Next up, the Brearley pairing will hope to maintain their winning start to the season at the City RC (Hull) 2-Up TTT on March 12.
