Alison Fovargue and David Mead notched up Bank Holiday Monday victories at the Coalville Wheelers 19.8-mile time trial near Griffydam, Leicestershire.

Fovargue, riding for Team Empella Cyclocross.com, clocked 50-58 and was fastest female by 24 seconds from Ilkeston CC’s Hayley Moore, while Larissa Alexander (Coalville Wheelers) was 1-49 further back in third spot.

Fastest male was Hinckley Cycle Racing Club’s David Mead, whose time of 42-20 gave him the overall win by just three seconds over Spindata’s pre-race favourite Leon Wright (Race Hub), while third was Team Bottrill veteran Gareth Pymm with 45-05.

Starting just north of Griffydam, the course takes riders up and over the A42 before looping back round through Breedon on the Hill and down towards Lount and Newbold, passing through Griffydam and Osgathorpe to finish near Belton.

This was Mead’s first open time trial win of the season so far, but he has posted some good results and quick times, finishing second in the Leamington C&AC 10 and Sherwood CC 25 earlier in August, as well as second at the Rugby RCC 10 and third in the Worcester St John’s CC in July.

He is next hoping to be in action at the Northampton and District 10 on September 17, as well as the Kettering CC 10 the following weekend.

Fovargue’s win was her second this season in open events, having also been victorious at the Coalville Wheelers 10 in March. More recently, she placed second at the Stratford CC 10 in April.

She was eight seconds quicker this year than her winning time in the same event in 2021.

Outside of the top three, Nottingham Clarion’s Matthew Uttley was just six seconds off a podium place in fourth, while Richard Golding (JCA Equipe Velo) was another two and a half minutes back in fifth.

In other categories, fastest in the two-up event were Colin Parkinson (South Western Road Club) and Andy Eagers (Derby Mercury RC) in 46-55, which was 31 seconds better than runners-up Mark Bottrill (Team Bottrill) and Jack Harrison (Belper BC).
