Lizi Brooke

Lizi Brooke (Wahoo Endurance Zone p/b Le Col) got her season off to a winning start finishing nearly five minutes clear of her nearest rival in the Charlotteville Cycling Club 50, while Ronnie Stone (Regents Park Rouleurs) won the men’s event.

Last season Brooke, aged 32, finished third in the National 100-mile Championships riding as Lizi Duncombe, and she showed the benefits of good winter training on this occasion winning in a time of one hour and 55 minutes.

The H50/8 saw riders start south-west of Farnham before riders completed two full laps of the out and back course between Farnham and Chawton before a shorter final leg to Alton.

Brooke, from London, won the bike-pace 50 last season in a personal best time of 1-53-28 last season and set a good benchmark time for this year.

Lara Thomas (Stowmarket & District CC) was the only other woman to break the two-hour marker taking second in 1-59-48 while Emma O'Toole (Districts of Hamwic Cyclesport) finished third (2-05-00).

Ronnie Stone

In the women’s veteran category host club rider Elodie Hudson was the fastest in 2-22-33 finishing just 45 seconds ahead of Michelle Walter (Bournemouth Arrow CC) while Mhairi Smith (Stomp the Pedal) completed the podium positions (2-24-11).

In the men’s category veteran rider Stone took victory in a time of one hour, 43 minutes and 53 seconds.

Last season Stone won the North Hampshire RC 10 and he showed his power over the longer distance to take victory on this occasion.

A close battle for the remaining podium positions saw three riders separated by just 33 seconds.

Michael Nagi (Team Bottrill) led home the battle taking second in 1-45-33 with Nick Richards (GS Mossa) finishing third in 1-45-55 while Pat Wright (Paceline RT) was close fourth a further 11 seconds behind (1-46-06).

Stone was also quickest veteran finishing ahead of Peter Younghusband (Petersfield Triathlon Club) in second (1-46-54) while Andrew Rivett (Velo Club St Raphael) was third in the age category (1-48-17).
