Dougie Watson (GTR-Return to Life) and Joanna Patterson (The Independent Pedaler-Nopinz) turned in impressive performances on their way to victory in the Scottish National 10-Mile Championship, promoted by Glasgow Nightingale CC in Renfrewshire on Sunday morning.
Watson’s time of 19-57 was the only one under the 20-minute mark, giving him victory in the men’s event by 25 seconds from Ryan Bunyan (Torvelo Racing), while Watson’s team-mate at GTR, Sandy Taylor was third with 20-29.
Patterson’s time of 21-23 gave her the win by almost two minutes from Alexandra Hayden of Vanelli-Project GO, while third quickest female was Beth MacRae (Ayr Roads CC) with 23-29.
“I’ve done a low 19-minute time on that course before, but I’ve changed my position since then so I didn’t really have anything to compare today’s ride to,” said Watson afterwards. “I’ve only done one ten-miler this season so far, so it felt hard because I haven’t acclimatised myself yet!
“I thought it was going to be a faster day initially, it felt fast up to the turn. But it was really grippy on the way home. It stayed dry for me, but some of the early starters had some drizzle and there was some spray from overnight rain.
“I’m riding the Merlin Cycles Classic Series on a road bike next weekend, then I’m looking at doing some longer events, like the Scottish 50 and 100 Championships.”
And Patterson’s win came despite mis-threading her chain and suffering a loss of power – but at least it stayed on and she did enough to win the women’s title.
“I threaded my chain wrongly and there was nobody to check it,” she admitted. “I only realised once I’d set off that the power was down, but thankfully it didn’t break totally or cut through.
“Last year I was about a minute quicker on the same course from a similar power output, but thankfully it was still good enough for the win. This is a local course for me so I know it really well.
“I’ve been doing a lot of training for 50s and 100s, nothing specific for shorter distances, so I’m pleased with this win.
“Later in the year I’m looking at getting a good time at the National 100, perhaps a 3-40, and I’ll probably do the National 50 too. I also want to have a go at the RRA 100 record and get under 3-20, which will be a real challenge.”
In other categories, the tandem pairing of Gavin and James Shirley (Studio Velo) went close to a Scottish record time of 19-51, 29 seconds quicker than second-placed Warren Crombie and Alasdair Watt (MRCC).
