Less than 24 hours after winning the 12-mile championship titles, Fiona Prew and Chris Smart added the Emergency Services 25-Mile Championship crowns to their palmares with wins in Northumberland on Sunday morning.

Smart (GTR - Return to Life) clocked 52-49 to take victory by more than a minute with Tom Clements (Wessex Road Club) who covered the M254 course near Ponteland in 54-01, while third spot went to Giant-Kendal RT rider Richard Butler with 54-02.

And Prew, the 42-year-old who rides for Stone Wheelers, was victorious in a time of 1-03-39 which was almost seven minutes quicker than her nearest rival in Natalie Batey (Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service CC) who clocked 1-10-25, with third spot in the women’s category going to Esther Hamill (Dumfries CC), another five minutes back with 1-15-58.

Conditions were good for the event with dry and warm weather greeting the riders, who tackled the M254 course which takes them out north west up the A696 from Ponteland up to Kirkwhelpington before they turn and head for home.

This was the latest in a string of victories for Smart, who was part of the winning duo in the Bute Wheelers 20-mile time trial last Saturday where he and Doug Watson clocked 44-16.

Chris Smart.

Earlier this month he won the Glasgow Wheelers 26, the Cleveland Wheelers 9.4-mile event in August, the Dundee Thistle 50 in July, and the Tyne and Wear Fire Service 12 in May.

Prew placed fourth female at the VTTA National 25-Mile Championships recently clocking 1-00-50, and in the Rugby RCC 10-mile event in July she was sixth overall in a strong field.

Also in July she rode the Beacon Road Club’s road bike 10-mile event, where only multiple national champion Hayley Simmonds was faster, Prew clocking 23-33.
