Ward and Richardson battle to victories in Welsh 30-Mile Championships

Tom Ward (AeroLab Ward WheelZ) set a new Welsh record on his way to winning the Welsh CA (Welsh Championships) 30, while Rebecca Richardson (Team Brother UK) was a clear winner in the women’s event.

Ward, aged 25, won the Welsh Championship 10 in 2019 and added the Welsh CA (Welsh Championships) 30 to his collection.

His time of 57 minutes and 26 seconds was eight seconds faster than Keiron Davies's Welsh record set in 2018.

The R30/7 saw riders start at Raglan before heading north-easterly along the A40 to Monmouth before returning past the finish to before heading north-westerly to Abergavenny and then making the return journey.

Ward took his first victory of the season in the Redditch Road & Path CC 10 earlier this month clocking 18-58 and again took the honours.

Christopher Gibbard (Bynea Cycling Club) has won five events already this season but had to settle for second this time out clocking 58-24.

Meanwhile, quickest veteran was Philip Tucker (Bynea Cycling Club) who placed third overall in 1-00-44 ahead of second veteran on scratch Keith Ainsworth (Sheffrec CC) in 1-01-36 and third vet Andrew Butcher (Cwmcarn Paragon Road Club) a further seven seconds back.

Junior Dylan Griffiths (Towy Riders Cycle Club) was quickest road bike in 1-07-18.

So far this season Rebecca Richardson (Team Brother UK) has been in action on her road bike winning both the National Circuit Championship and second round of the Merlin Classic Series.

On this occasion she won the women’s event in a time of 1-06-21, which was seven minutes faster than her nearest rival.

Quickest veteran Teresa Robbins (Reading CC) led the battle behind and took second place in 1-13-23 which was 33 seconds quicker than fellow veteran Rebecca Comins (Newport Phoenix CC) (1-13-56).
