Veteran Dave Diston (Muckle CC) proved fastest overall at the Ferryhill Wheelers hill-climb, while Ellen Powell (Durham Triathlon Club) was the winner of the women’s event on Quarrington Hill in Northumberland.

40-year-old Diston completed the 1.1-mile course in 2:05.7, which was enough to see him finish five seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.

Second was Tom Harcourt (Team Bikeshop Tyrekey) who clocked a time of 2:10.3 to put himself on the podium. Following him was Mark Snape (Fietsen Tempo) who went through the course in 2:17.6.

This was Diston’s first win of the season, although he will be looking to take the win at the Cleveland Wheelers climb next weekend.

In the women’s event Ellen Powell came out on top in a time of 2:42.6 to secure back-to-back podium finishes. Second place was won by 14-year-old Sophie Heighton of the promoting club, she rode a time of 3:08.5.

On her most recent outing Powell finished second in the North Tyneside Riders hill-climb last weekend, narrowly missing out on a win by 11 seconds, but she bounced back and made sure to do enough to taste victory in this event. She will want to keep that up as she is scheduled to ride in the Allen Valley Velo climb next weekend.

Sophie’s older brother Thomas Heighton, 17, was best junior and he was also the fastest rider from the promoting club as well as placing fifth overall.
