Neil Harris

Veteran Neil Harris (Southborough & Dist. Whs) took his first victory of the season in style by winning the East Sussex CA 25 by almost a minute, while Sally Turner (trainSharp) convincingly won the women’s event.

Harris, aged 40, took podium places in his other three rides this season but took top spot for the first time on this occasion recording a time of 51 minutes and 17 seconds.

The G25/89 saw riders complete an out and back course with a slightly longer outward leg.

Riders started on the A22 near the Lampool Roundabout proceeding over the first roundabout and past the finish near Maresfield.

Continuing on the A22 riders past Uckfield before traveling through Halland, Whitesmith and Golden Cross before making the turn for home on the outskirts of Hailsham.

Scratch rider Harris was last in action in the Kent CA 50 back in May when his time of 1-46-38 was good enough for second on that occasion, only beaten by Christopher Fennell (The Independent Pedaler – Nopinz).

However, the veteran was not to be denied on this occasion with his time 57 seconds clear of his nearest challenger.

Matthew Smith (Team TMC) started a minute ahead of Harris and would have felt his rival breathing down his neck by the finish.

Smith had won the previous day’s East Sussex CA 10 but had to settle for second this time out clocking 52-14.

Sam Fuller (7Oaks Tri Club) was passed by the leading two riders but held his pace to finish a comfortable third place in 54-14.

In the women’s event Turner, who also won the East Sussex CA 10 the previous day recorded a weekend double recording a time of 57 minutes and 20 seconds – over nine minutes clear of her nearest rival.

Veteran Turner finished leading veteran and fourth overall in the National 50 Mile Championships last month and again showed her form taking a clear win in East Sussex.

A close battle for second place saw veteran Olivia Webb (Eastbourne Rovers CC) clock 1-06-44 which was just 10 seconds faster than fellow veteran Tracey Williams (Brighton Excelsior CC).
