Matthew Smith (Team TMC) took a slender victory by just three seconds in the Sussex CA 30, while Anouska Greenaway (Brighton Mitre CC) won the women’s event.
Smith, aged 36, clocked a winning time of one hour, three minutes and seven seconds which was just three seconds faster than Neil Harrigan (Gemini BC).
The G30/91 saw riders start near Washington and complete an opening 19-mile loop heading out westerly on the A283 and then north to West Grinstead before joining the A24 back south.
The second part of the event was an out and back leg along the A283 down to Shoreham-by-Sea and then making the return journey.
Despite calm wind conditions unrelenting rain made for a wet event in a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius.
On his last outing Smith won the Brighton Excelsior CC 25 on a shortened version of the same course clocking 50-42 to take a clear victory on that occasion.
This time he was pushed all the way by veteran rider Harrigan (1-03-10) while fellow veteran Andy Crichlow (Norwood Paragon CC) finished third a minute behind the winner (1-04-07).
The team event was won by Team TMC with Smith joined by Steven Kane 1-04-55 and Nik Allen 1-05-58.
