Steve Kane led a one-two for Team TMC in the Sussex CA 15-mile time trial in West Sussex on Saturday, while Bethan Male (Brighton Triathlon Club) won convincingly in the women’s event.

32-year-old Kane took victory by just two seconds from colleague Matthew Smith, who he had teamed up with last month on their way to second in the Sussex CA two-up 28.5-mile event.

Kane clocked exactly 31 minutes to take the win ahead of Smith, and joining them on the podium was veteran Chris Holmes (Twickenham CC) who was only another ten seconds off the pace which made him the fastest veteran on the day.

The win was Kane’s first of the season, an improvement on the second-place finish he took alongside Smith at the Sussex CA two-up in May.

Having secured first and second places, Team TMC also won the team prize, with Nik Allen completing the victorious trio in a time of 32:25 for a total of 1:34:27.

In the women’s event things weren’t as close. 30-year-old Bethan Male (Brighton Triathlon Club) went brilliantly on a perfect sunny morning, securing victory in 37:47, nearly two-and-a-half minutes quicker than her nearest rival.

Tracey Williams (Brighton Excelsior CC) and Grace Davies (Project 51) topped off the rest of the podium, clocking in at 40:02 and 43:09 respectively.

This was Male’s first race of the season but we can expect to see more of her from now as she gets a taste for victory.

Quickest veteran in the women’s event was second-placed Williams, taking a podium spot this time after missing out in Sussex last month over 25 miles.

The popular G15/92 course begins near Washington and heads south on the A283 Steyning Road. They head round the Steyning bypass and on to the outskirts of Shoreham-by-Sea before turning for home and finishing to the east of Washington.
