Dave Bell (Cambridge CC) was fastest by almost one minute in the Southern Counties Cycling Union 10-mile time trial in Surrey on Saturday.
The 33-year-old from Cambridge clocked 20-59, and only man to go under 21 minutes on a challenging course near North Holmwood. His nearest challenger was junior Joshua Ballinger, the Preston Park YCC rider who stopped the clock in 21-52. There were no female competitors.
This was Ball’s first open time trial ridden this season, but he was aiming for more glory with a ride in the Newbury Velo 10 on Sunday, and will also ride the National Circuit Championships on June 6 in search of more good results.
Ballinger’s impressive time of 21-52 saw him go home with the £20 for second spot instead of the lesser junior prize pot, while third was veteran rider James Amy (Casp CC) in 22-20.
Behind them things remained close with Richard Tully (Elite Cycling) clocking 22-34, and Paul Smith (VeloRefined Rule 5) completing the G10/42 in 22-49. Just five seconds further back was Mid Sussex Tri Club rider Neil Giles.
Tully shared the handicap prize with Giles, both having an adjusted time of 20-14, while there was also a tie for third spot in that category with Lincon Rodriguez (Elite Cycling) and Peter Madarasz (Brighton Tri Club) both being three seconds slower on handicap.
Fastest veteran on standard was Robert Gilmour (Hounslow and District Wheelers). The 69-year-old from Staines clocked 25-35 for 17th overall and a plus on his age standard on +6.25, which was 1-07 quicker than his nearest rival Mark Newton (Elite Cycling).
Newton formed part of the winning team for Elite Cycling, with Rodrigues and Tully joining him in the winning trio and taking home an additional five pounds each.
The popular G10/42 course begins at North Holmwood and heads south on the Horsham Road, A24 Capel bypass, going as far as Clark’s Green where they turn and head back up.
