Both the women’s and men’s course records fell at the Kingston Wheelers Gil Jessop Memorial time trial in Surrey on Sunday, with Zeb Kyffin and Jennifer George showing great early-season form in the 27th edition of the event.
Kyffin, the 23-year-old Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling rider from London, covered the 13.6-mile GS292a course near Ripley in 28-41, slicing 37 seconds from the previous record held by Ed Bradbury since 2018.
And in the women’s event 38-year-old Jennifer George, the London-based lady who rides for The Independent Pedaler, clocked 33-09 which was 1-09 quicker than Alice Lethbridge’s previous course record set two years ago.
Kyffin took the event win by 51 seconds from Rupert Graham (Spirit Tifosi RT), while the final spot on the virtual podium went to Saint Piran’s Ross Holland with 29-46.
George’s time was easily the quickest by a female in this year’s event, with second-placed Detta Guerrini, the Onyx RT veteran, clocking 34-57 and third in the women’s category going to Samantha Fawcett (Pro-Noctis-Redchilli Bikes) with 35-21.
The event – usually run in February – was welcomed by warm 12-degree conditions, and alongside the lockdown it meant there was a quality field of riders for the annual sporting event.
The veterans prizes went to Guerrini for the women and her Onyx RT team-mate James Muir in the men’s category, while Jack Hartrey (Kingston Wheelers) was quickest junior in 36-59 while Amber Junker Brameld (VC Londres) was only 34 seconds further back as fastest junior girl.
In the road bike category Guerrini was fastest, while Monte Guerrini (London Dynamo) was best male on a road bike in 31-07, winning by just three seconds from Michael Cunliffe (Paceline RT).
