Matthew Smith

Matthew Smith (Drag2zero) and Angela Carpenter (a3crg) were quickest male and female riders at the Lea Valley CC 10-mile time trial near Cambridge on Saturday.

Smith,43 and from Newmarket, covered the E2/10 course at Six Mile Bottom in 17-51 to take the win by 28 seconds from James Jenkins (Richardsons-Trek RT), while Richard Oakes (Team Ohten Aveas) was third, another two seconds back.

Fastest female was the in-form veteran Angela Carpenter (a3crg), the 52-year-old from Chichester whose time of 20-27 gave her overall victory by 13 seconds from Sally Turner (trainSharp), while CAMS Racing pro and former national champion Hayley Simmonds was third, another 13 seconds back in 20-53.

And there was another speedy performance in the tandem event, with Newbury Velo team-mates Ian Greenstreet and Rachael Elliot clocking 18-20.

The event also featured a middlemarkers event for riders slower than 22-40 over the last three seasons, and that was won by Simon Hall (Stourbridge CC) in 20-39, 53 seconds better than Stefan Hurst (Ronde CC).

Best of the women middlemarkers was all-rounder Madeleine Gammons, the Jadan CycleSpace rider who is equally comfortable in time trials as road races. Her time of 21-59 was 32 seconds ahead of second fastest female middlemarkers Karen Aylen (Maldon & Dist CC).

The last rider off, this was Smith’s third win of the season so far in open time trials, having also won the Cambridge CC 15 in May and the East Anglian VTTA 10 on the same course. This was his third consecutive ride on this course, and his fastest performance.

He is next due to be in action in the Shaftesbury CC 50 on July 18, as well as the mid-week CC Breckland 25 on July 21.

A prolific winner, this was Carpenter’s fourth win in a row according to her CTT profile, having also been fastest female in the CC Breckland 50, the Alton CC 10 and the Viking 50 in June.
