Munro and Wilkinson take top spots in the Sunderland Clarion climb
Nick Munro (Royal Air Force Cycling Association) came out on top in the Sunderland Clarion CC hill climb event, while Sarah Wilkinson (Blaydon CC) was the victor in the women’s event.
35-year-old Munro clocked in at 7:22.1 to put himself on top of the podium at the two-mile event on Silverhills, Haggs Lane, in Lamesley.
Taking second spot was Colin Atkinson (Muckle CC) as he finished just a few seconds off the pace at 7:36.4 and in third was Lee Ager (Blaydon CC) who finished in 7:35.8 to finish off the podium.
Munro started his hill climbing season off with a runner up ride a few weeks back but has only gotten better since then, going 2/2 wins and then picking up another in this event. He competed in the National Hill climb Championships last year so will be looking to do the same again this year, which is looking likely the way things are going and considering his good form.
In the women’s event it was Sarah Wilkinson that was victorious, completing the course in 9:02.4.
Heather Witham made it a Blaydon CC 1-2 as she clocked in at 11:05.7 to finish second behind her team-mate. In third was Lois Jarvis (North Tyneside Riders CC), she clocked a time of 11:18.7.
Wilkinson was competing in her fourth open hill climb event of the season according to her CTT account, having now won three of them. She finished on the podium in the other. She missed out on the National’s last year but she will likely be looking to put herself into position to compete this year and it looks like she is in a good place to do so as of right now.
