Marcel Schubert (Darlington Cycling Club) continued his impressive season by taking victory in the Blaydon CC 23, while Jen McMahon (Sub Rosa) won the women’s event.

Schubert, aged 40, from Darlington, made it eight wins for the season in a winning time of 52 minutes and 50 seconds.

The sporting M23-1 course saw riders start near Mitford outside Morpeth before completing a tough opening leg along the B6343 to Scots Gap and then a loop of around seven miles before the return journey to Mitford.

The course included a combination of fast sections along with short but steep climbs to test the strength of riders.

An overcast morning with little wind helped riders and Schubert ran out the men’s victor by 28 seconds.

Lewis Timmins (Vector Racing) finished second in the Barnesbury CC 10 last month and had to settle for the runners-up spot once again on this occasion clocking 53-18.

Meanwhile, Terry Wilkinson (Barnesbury CC) completed the top three positions covering the course in 54-28.

Junior rider Daniel Holmes (Derwentside CC) finished third in the National 25 in his age category earlier this month and finished fourth overall in 55-22.

Jen McMahon.

Schubert was fastest veteran on scratch ahead of Phil Hall (Velo Culture) in 56-06 while Shaun Tyson (Protech Velo) was third in the age category 56-19.

“I had the perfect run today,” said Schubert.

“I like the mix of fast straights and twisty segments which this course provides. I knew there was a lot of elevation which had to be covered in the first half so I tried to push hard on the way out.

“The return is mostly downhill with some very fast sections, but there are quite a few tight corners too, so I guess having course knowledge is a real advantage.

“I knew that I would not be able to ride at the same power on the return, so I went steadier then tried to build the speed back up coming straight out of the corners.

“The event marshals did a fantastic job out there today.”

In the road bike category John Bowman (Muckle Cycle Club) took a convincing victory with his impressive time of 55-43 good enough for fifth place overall.

A close battle for second saw veteran rider Darren Robson (North Tyneside Riders CC) finish in 1-00-37 which was 39 seconds quicker than Philip Gilbanks (Muckle Cycle Club).

After finishing third in the Allen Valley Velo 24.8 and Barnesbury CC 10 earlier this season Jen McMahon (Sub Rosa) took the women’s victory on this occasion clocking 1-05-14.

Justine Norman (Velo Culture) finished second in 1-11-51 ahead of fellow veteran Tracey Sample (Alnwick & District Triathlon Club) 1-12-42.
