Powell and Rees record wins at Houghton CC 10
Jack Rees set a new course record, while Ellen Powell was fastest female in the Houghton CC 10-mile time trial in County Durham on Sunday.
Rees, the 32-year-old from Stockton on Tees who rides for Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling, clocked exactly 21 minutes, taking 18 seconds off the previous fastest for the M1010b.
That gave him the win by 45 seconds from Phil Hall (Velo Culture) with Neil Wilkinson (Blaydon CC) third, another 25 seconds back.
“It was my first time riding the course, even though it’s fairly local to me,” said Rees. “It has a couple of tough undulations which impact your rhythm - thankfully the traffic was fairly light due to the early start and we all got lucky with the weather, avoiding the rain which was forecast. Houghton CC and friends did a great job marshalling the course and I’m pleased to take my first time trial win of the season.”
The junior male course record also fell today, juvenile Joe Dixon of Velo Culture (22:39), taking 37 seconds off the record set by his brother Daniel in 2018, for a very credible eighth place overall.
For the women, 30-year-old Ellen Powell of Durham Triathlon Club was first (24:41), while around two and a half minutes back in second was Justine Norman (Velo Culture), with Katarina Bonner (Team Newcastle Triathlon) third.
Fastest veteran on actual time was Phil Hall of Velo Culture (21:45) for second overall, and fastest veteran on standard was Wayne Coates of Team Bottrill (22:36/+5.30) for sixth overall.
Nick Munro (Royal Air Force Cycling Association) took another road bike win (22:36), while the fastest rider from the host Club was Stephen Boxall (25:02).
