Finlay Robertson and Lois Jarvis were fastest male and female riders respectively at the Allen Valley Velo 14-mile time trial near Allendale in Northumberland on Saturday.
Robertson, the 22-year-old from Corbridge who rides for Derwentside CC, covered the new M14b course in 32-15 to take the win by 1-44 from junior team-mate Daniel Holmes, while the podium was completed by Nick Badcock (Team Kirkley Cycles) who was another 29 seconds adrift.
North Tyneside Riders’ Lois Jarvis, 36, was fastest female in 43-47, and was also quickest female on a road bike. Her time was 43 seconds better than second-placed female in Tracey Semple, the 51-year-old Alnwick & District Tri Club rider who was also on a road bike, while Melanie Annable (Allen Valley Velo) was just six seconds further back in third.
The course was previously used for a club event in 2019, but with last year’s event being cancelled because of the lockdown, this was the first open time trial on these roads. It was cooler and slightly overcast than recently but still pleasant, and riders enjoyed being able to have a results board and al fresco coffee afterwards.
Top junior Daniel Holmes and fastest juvenile Ciaran Lally (Racing Metro 15) who is 15, both received their prizes, but other proceeds from the event went to the Great North Air Ambulance Charity.
In other categories the best man on a road bike was RAF CA’s Nick Munro with 35-49 for fifth overall, while best veteran was fourth-placed Chris Mather (Derwentside CC).
This was Robertson’s seventh open time trial of the year, and his fifth victory following wins in the Derwentside CC 9.9, the Barnesbury CC 10, the Houghton CC 25 and the Blaydon CC 50. He was second in the Barnesbury CC 25 last weekend, but got back to winning ways with this performance in the Allen Valley Velo event.
For Jarvis, this was her first victory in open time trialling according to her CTT record, but comes after she placed third in the Tyneside Vagabonds’ 47-mile event back in May.
