Keith Dorling (Team Bottrill) secured victory in the Islington CC 12-mile time trial in Cambridgeshire, while Rachel Brown (CC London) claimed top spot in the women’s event on Saturday.

62-year-old Dorling from Saffron Walden came out on top with a time of 25:40, and he was closely followed by second-placed Leigh Smith who was just 23 seconds behind.

Smith (JCA Equipe Velo) clocked in at 26:03 and was followed by Duncan Gilbert (North Essex Velo) who claimed the final spot on the podium with a time of 26:25.

Dorling’s victory makes it back-to-back wins having also won the Victoria CC 10.2-mile event the weekend before, while he was third in the Essex Roads CC 10 earlier in July. For second placed Smith this was his first podium of the season and first since June 2019.

In the women’s event it was Rachel Brown that was victorious, riding the 12 miles in 29:08. Ann Shuttleworth (Cambridge CC) was over a minute off the pace, clocking in at 30:50 to take second. And Delyth Williams (Dulwich Paragon CC) finished off the women’s podium, completing the course in 31:03.

Brown had been yet to participate in an open event, this was her first so she will be delighted to come away on top.

Shuttleworth failed to finish in the top three in her last event, her most recent podium was a second placed finish in a Victoria CC two-up event.

The weather for the event was mild, with a bit of a wind and intermittent rain. There were a number of first timers and the 12-mile distance was a first for the club, having only ever hosted 10-mile events previously.

It proved to be a popular course and headquarters, despite a couple of dodgy bits of road surface.

Beginning near Guilden Morden, the course takes riders up through Wendy and on the Wimpole Estate, where they turn and head west towards Wrestlingworth and back down to Guilden Morden.
