Rebecca Comins (Newport Phoenix CC) snatched victory by a single second in the St Piran/Northover Vets Team 10 including the Royal Navy Championship, while Joshua Clark (Royal Navy & Royal Marines CA) won the men’s event.

Veteran rider Comins recorded a time of 24 minutes and eight seconds on the tough course which was just a single second faster than Charlotte Marshall (Royal Navy & Royal Marines CA).

The U30/10 is known as being one of the tougher 10-mile courses in the country starting and finishing near Podimore, Somerset before heading out past Ilchester and climbing up to the turn.

Competitors were met by dull and overcast conditions with a headwind out to the turn and tailwind on the return.

Comins finished runner-up in the West Wales Cyclists’ League (Welsh Championship) 100 earlier this season but went one better on this occasion.

Scratch rider Marshall and Comins were predicted to both record times of 24-12 and with both going faster than that only one second separated them with Marshall second in 24-09.

Finishing third on this occasion was Charley Helyar (VTTA West Group) who covered the course in 24-45.

Katie Pratt (Royal Navy & Royal Marines CA) was the quickest road bike rider in 26-49.

Meanwhile, in the men’s competition scratch rider Clark recorded a time of 19-39 which was enough for victory.

Clark, aged 23, won the Bournemouth Arrow 10 earlier this month in a time of 21-08 and went faster on this occasion.

Spindata had predicted that Clark would win but he went 25 seconds faster than the 20-04 winning time forecasted.

Tom Scorer (Royal Navy & Royal Marines CA) led the battle behind taking second in 19-54 while team-mate and quickest veteran Gavin MacDougall finished third (20.17)

The men’s road bike category was won by Hassan Nada (Royal Navy & Royal Marines CA) in 22-30.
