Andy Nichols led a one-two for Team Lifting Gear Products/Cycles In Motion and snatched victory by half a second from his team-mate, while Frances Owen (Fibrax Wrexham RC) won the women’s event.
In a replica on the morning’s event on the Riber Road hill climb Nichols and Owen recorded their second victories of the day over shorter climb and took overall honours in the men’s and women’s events.
Scratch rider Nichols, from Sheffield, recorded a ninth victory of the season in a time of one minute and 46.5 seconds over the 700-yard climb with an average of 12% and maximum of 25% gradient.
Running through the centre of Matlock the Bank Road hill climb heads straight up with the steepest gradient at the top on the final push to the finish line.
Improving weather greeted riders after the wet morning competition of the Riber Road hill climb but it was still raining at times with the wind come from the side of competitors.
Nichols won the Riber Road event in the morning by five seconds but was pushed all the way on this occasion by Calum Brown who missed the morning event.
Brown, who also finished second to Nichols on the Monsal hill climb, had to settle for the runner-up position again half a second down in 1-47.0.
After finishing third in the morning’s event on Riber Bank, David Fellows (Solihull CC) repeated the result on Bank Road clocking 1-50.9.
Spindata had predicted a closer fight between team-mates Nichols, Brown and Kieran Wynne-Cattanach all forecast to post 1-51 which was five seconds slower than the actual winning time.
In the veteran’s competition Steven Price (Ludlow Brewery RT) was quickest in 2-10.4 ahead of Andrew Laidler (Sitwell CC) in second (2-12.5) and Jon Wild (Veloviewer) in third (2-14.9)
As in the morning’s event Ryan Williams (Beeston Cycling Club) was the quickest juvenile rider covering the course in a time of 2-11.5.
Welsh rider Owen also had a successful day recording her second victory in a time of 2-23.6 which was 12 seconds clear of her nearest rival.
That was Becky Hair (Magspeed Racing) who was fastest at the halfway mark but came second at the finish in 2-35.4.
Meanwhile, third placed woman was Alison Dockney (Market Drayton CC) who completed the climb in 3-09.2.
Quickest juvenile girl, as was the case on the Riber Road climb, was once again Maia Howell (Matlock CC) who posted a time of 3-31.0 while fastest veteran woman was Sonia Insley (Bolsover & District CC) in 3-48.1.
