Douglas Watson (GTR - Return to Life) was the standout performer, grabbing the win in the Beacon Wheelers charity 10-mile time trial, while Karen Bailey (East Lancashire RC) claimed top spot in the women’s event.
48-year-old Watson made it four wins in a row with this victory, covering the course near Keswick in an impressive 19:18 in order to fend off the competition.
Leading the pack of followers was Lewis Timmins (Vector Racing) who completed the course in 19:36 to narrowly miss out on the top spot himself. In third was Lloyd Wise (Bikestrong - KTM), who clocked in at 19:52 and was the last of the riders to come home under 20 minutes.
In the women’s event it was 44-year-old Karen Bailey to come away the victor after placing second in her previous two events. She clocked a time of 24:23.
Second spot went to another veteran Carol Westmorland (Border City Whs), who completed the course in 25:16, while the final available spot on the podium was won by Esther Hamill (Dumfries CC) as she was able to ride a time of 25:17, just a second slower than the competitor ahead.
The picturesque course begins alongside Bassenthwaite Lake, and heads south towards Keswick, where riders turn back and head through Thornthwaite back to a finish point just before the start.
Watson was next due to be in action in the Glasgow Wheelers 26-mile event on Sunday, but next weekend he takes on the VC Glasgow South 22 before heading to the Isle of Bute on September 18-19 for two events.
