Jacob Bush (Bourne Wheelers) and Ella Jamieson (Team Bottrill) stormed to victories in the junior boys’ and girls’ categories at the RTTC National Junior 25 Mile Championship.
Bush, aged 16, won the boys’ event by 39 seconds clocking a time of 50 minutes and 20 seconds for victory.
Meanwhile, Jamieson, also aged 16, posted a time of 56-51 which was over six minutes quicker than her nearest challenger and smashed her previous open personal best.
The national championships were held on the L2529 between Keswick and Cockermouth in Cumbria.
In wet conditions riders battled along the A66 from the start/finish at Keswick alongside the Bassenthwaite Lake before turning westerly past Embleton to the turn at Cockermouth and then making the return journey.
The course was described as one for the powerful riders along fast roads with a few small inclines to test the legs.
Bush won the National Circuit Championship last year but had to settle for seventh in the National 25 posting 51-31 on that occasion.
Earlier this season Bush had shown his form over 10 miles winning the LRRA 10 and Bourne Wheelers 10 and he also posted a 19-12 in the Hemel Hempstead 10.
Bush’s winning time of 50-20 on this occasion was a personal best and beat Jeremy MacLean (Solihull CC) by 39 seconds (50-59).
A close battle for third saw Daniel Holmes (Derwentside CC) record a time of 52-51 which beat Arthur Hitchen (Orwell Velo) by 33 seconds (53-24).
In the junior girls’ event Jamieson beat her previous open 25 personal best by three minutes and 43 seconds to take her first national title.
The 16-year-old’s only other open 25 came in last year’s National 25 Mile Championships when she posted a time of 1-00-34 which was good enough for sixth on that occasion.
However, her personal best performance this time out was more than enough to take the national title beating juvenile Abbey Thompson (Suffolk Youth Race Team) into second posting 1-03-23.
The fight for third saw Bethany Spencer (Kettering CC) post 1-05-46 which beat Sophie Quay-Clark (Palmer Park Velo) into fourth (1-07-37) while Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Whs) finished a further 30 seconds back in fifth.
