Liam Beaty (Hawick CC) and Deborah Moss (Team Merlin) powered to victory in the men’s and women’s category at the Border City Wheelers 10-mile time trial on Saturday afternoon near Keswick.
Beaty, 35, clocked 18-57 to take the win by 47 seconds from Jason Bateman (VTTA North Lancs and Lakes), with Patrick Hickey (Rossendale RC) third, another eight seconds off the pace.
And in the women’s event Moss took the win in 22-26, giving her the win by 2-53 over fellow veteran Carol Westmorland of the promoting club, while Esther Hamill (Dumfries CC) was third, another 23 seconds behind Westmorland.
Using the L1010 course, riders begin alongside Bassenthwaite Lake and head down the A66 to Thornthwaite, Braithwaite, and to the north of Keswick with the turn being at the junction with the A591, before heading back to finish just before the start point.
For Beaty, this was his first open time trial win of the season in his first ride, having only ridden one event last year too – the VC Cumbria 31.2-mile event in February 202, which he also won just before the first lockdown.
Conversely to Beaty, Moss has been prolific this season having won seven events from 13 on her CTT record – and she isn’t stopping there.
She won the Blackburn & District CTC 10.6-mile event last month as well as the West Pennine RC 25, and prior to that in May she was fastest female at the Southport CC 10 and Border City Wheelers 33 in May. And April saw her finish as fastest woman at the Mersey Tri 10.
She next rides is Wednesday’s Kent Valley RC 15, as well as the VTTA National 25-Mile Championship next Sunday.
