Richard Bussell broke the course record on his way to victory in the Stratford CC 10-mile time trial in Warwickshire on Saturday, while Naomi Leonard was quickest female.

Bussell, the 32-year-old AeroCoach rider, clocked 18-48 to break the four-year-old course record held by Stuart Travis by eight seconds despite conditions not being perfect with a cross-headwind on the dual carriageway section towards the end of the K33/10d course.

His time was 37 seconds quicker than runner-up David Fellows (Solihull CC), while Jacob Tipper (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling) was another 32 seconds back in third spot.

Meanwhile 36-year-old Naomi Leonard (Coventry Triathletes) clocked 21-26 to take the women’s prize by just ten seconds from Anna Morris (AeroLab Ward Wheelz), with Rosie Armitage (Stratford CC) third female and 1-21 further off the pace.

The national champion over the distance back in 2016, Bussell took some time away from cycling but has only ridden a few events since then including hill climbs as well as time trials. Third in the National Hill-Climb Championship in 2019, he went on to place fifth in last year’s National 10 and fourth in the National Closed Circuit Championship.

He will next be in action next Sunday in round two of the Merlin Cycles Classic Time Trial Series on the nearby K22/39 course.

The K33/10d course takes riders from the start near Dunnington, down to Norton where they turn back up on Evesham Road, tracking the A46 through Salford Priors where they join it, benefitting from the dual carriageway on their way to the finish near Alcester.
