Jonathan Morris and Madeleine Heywood took the men’s and women’s prizes at the Chippenham & District Wheelers hill climb near Lacock on Saturday.

Morris improved on his last performance by moving up from second place on the podium to the top.

The 28-year-old AeroCoach rider finished in the runner-up position last time out at the VC Cumbria hill climb last weekend but went one better here on Saturday, completing in 4:34.7 to win the event. He also went on to compete in the Severn RC hill climb later in the same day, finishing sixth.

The UH80 Bowden Hill course begins on Bewley Crescent before heading out across Bewley common and climbing Bowden Hill to cross Bowden Hill Common. It then turns a left-hand corner, finishing at the top of the hill adjacent to Spye Park.

Morris took victory by 4.3 seconds with Spirit Tifosi RT rider Frazier Carr finishing second in 4:39.0. Carr had a solid September, also securing the runner-up spot in the CC Baskingstoke and Team Swindon Cycles hill climbs. Two seconds further down on Carr was Sri Chinmoy CT’s 43-year-old veteran Tejvan Pettinger, the former national champion.

Madeleine Heywood took victory for Lea Valley CC with a time of 5:32.1 and Bexy Dew of army Cycling was second in 5:38.6. Bexy was another rider that followed up the Chippenham event with a trip over to the Severn RC climb in the afternoon on the same day.

Pushing the time of Dew was third-placed Nicole Coates of Torelli. Her time of 5:47.3 secured her third place and first under-23 woman. Top-placed veteran woman was Fulfil the Potential Racing member Sasha Smith in 6:49.8.

Fourth overall, Carl Jolley of the University of Bristol CC was top male under-23 in 4:42.5. With Pettinger taking the veteran prize, only a very fine margin separated second and third-placed with Glyndwr Griffiths (73 Degrees Bicycles, WestSide Coaching RT) second and ninth overall in 5:01.2 and Steve Thomas (Bristol RC) third and 10th overall in 5:03.2.
