Veteran riders Simon Wilson (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling) and Sarah Storey (Storey Racing) charged to the men’s and women’s victories respectively in the Stretford Wheelers 25

With just a week until the National 25 Mile Championships Wilson, who finished third in the National 10 last month, knocked a minute and 10 seconds off his own course record setting a new mark of 48 minutes and 49 seconds.

A north westerly wind was favourable for fast times on the J2/9 course as riders were blown along from the start on the A535 towards Chelford.

Competitors then joined the A537 towards Ollerton and then cutting across to Toft before heading south through the finish on the A50 through Allostock.

Riders then cut back across to Twemlow Green before heading back through the start and completing a further half-a-lap to the finish.

A rough road surface and busy traffic which included several farm vehicles on the A50 hindered some riders

Competing in his first open 25 of the season Wilson returned to the J2/9 on which he set the course record on in the East Lancs Road Club 25 last June clocking 49-50 on that occasion.

Despite beating Wilson’s previous course record Adam Duggleby (Almerico Vive Le Velo) had to settle for second in 49-11, while Jack Levick (Rose Race Team) finished third finishing in 51-52.

Junior rider Aidan Lawrence (HMT Hospitals Giant Cycling Team) showed his former ahead of next week’s National 25 finishing fourth overall in 52-44 ahead of fellow junior Francis Woodcock (Team SB Hub) in 53-09.

Quickest under-23 was Tristan Pilling (Team SB Hub) who clocked 54-53 while fastest juvenile was Lucas Jowett (Beeston Cycling Club) in 57-18

Storey is preparing for the National Closed Circuit Championships next month and charged around the course to clinch the women’s victory in a time of 55 minutes and 31 seconds.

After finishing third junior woman in the National 10 last month Maddie Leech (PH-MAS Cycling) is also preparing for next Sunday’s National 25 and took second in 57-28.

Keri Parton (Pro Vision Cycle Clothing) wrapped up the podium positions in 1-01.22
