Fiona Sharp and Darren Yarwood were the winners as Yorkshire Cycling Federation staged a 10-mile time trial near Ferrybridge in Yorkshire on Sunday.
Team Swift rider Sharp, 40 and from York, clocked 25-20 to win the women’s category by 1-27 from Karen Taylor (Team Sportslab) while Sandra Burrows (Vive le Velo) was third in that category with 29-50.
Yarwood, the 44-year-old Vive le Velo rider, covered the V910 course in 22-57 to secure overall victory by just one second from Harrogate Nova CC rival Peter Watson, with third place going to John Brearley (Squadra RT), another five seconds back.
It continued to be close down the minor placings, with Matthew Kirkbright (Army Cycling) only two seconds further back in fourth, while fifth spot went to Julian Ramsbottom (Team Bottrill), 20 seconds behind Kirkbright.
On a challenging day, Yarwood’s winning time was actually 49 seconds slower than he did in the same event 12 months ago when he was sixth. That marked the start of a prolific 2018 campaign for him, which included victory in the City RC two-up 10 where he teamed up with Paralympic ace and Vive le Velo team-mate Adam Duggleby. He also enjoyed 11 other podium finishes throughout the season.
Yarwood is next in action in Saturday’s Hull Thursday RC two-up 24 alongside Neil Cleminshaw, while he has also entered the Harrogate Nova CC 15 on March 23.
Fiona Sharp also won the 2018 YCF 10-mile event 12 months ago, when she clocked 24-48, 32 seconds quicker than this time.
In other categories, Blair Buss (Halifax Imperial Wheelers) won the medium gear event in 24-39, 15 seconds ahead of David Brearley (Squadra RT).
And fastest tandem was Selby CC pairing Andrew and Carolyn Bell in 28-43.
