Philip Graves and Kerry Gowland were victorious in the Stockton Wheelers 25-mile time trial staged in North Yorkshire on Sunday morning.

Graves, the 30-year-old VC York rider who is also a professional triathlete, covered the T252/3 course near Crathorne in 49-31 to take a convincing win on the day by more than two minutes from Duncan Mullier (Harrogate Nova CC), while Elliot Gowland (Houghton CC) was third, another minute off the pace.

Kerry Gowland clocked 1-00-08 to finish as fastest female. The 41-year-old Houghton CC rider was 1-52 quicker than runner-up Maria Mulleady (Team Swift) in the women’s category, while Sarah Foulds (Stockton Wheelers) was third.

The popular course used the A19, starting at Crathorne and heading down through Ingleby Arncliffe and down to Knayton, where riders turn and retrace.

A prolific time trial rider as well as triathlete, Graves was securing only the second open time trial victory of 2019 according to his record, but he has not been short of other good performances this season.

He placed third in the Harrogate Nova CC 15 back in March, and won the City RC Hull 15 on the last day of that month. He was then second in the City RC 10 in April as well as third in the same club’s 10 in May, before placing second in the Drighlington BC 10 in early June.

He is due to be in action at the Yorkshire CF 50 on July 20, before tackling the Team Sportslab 10 and Team Swift 100 the following weekend and the Otley CC 50 on August 4.

Gowland is no stranger to victory this season and, indeed, no stranger to this course. She was fastest female in last weekend’s Cleveland Coureurs 25 on the T252/3, where she was 2-30 slower than her winning time in this Stockton Wheelers event.

Other results this season for Gowland include wins in the Cleveland Coureurs 10 and Houghton CC 10, as well as second spot in the Ferryhill Wheelers 10, Sunderland Clarion 25 and Houghton CC 25 in June.

In other categories, the promoting club’s Lee Bainbridge was quickest on a road bike with a time of 1-05-39.
