Sam and Keith Murray

Teenager Sam Murray and his dad Keith Murray (both Drag2zero) were fastest pairing at the Darlington CC two-up 10-mile time trial near East Cowton in North Yorkshire on Saturday.

The pair clocked 20-42 for the T103 course near East Cowton, giving them the win by 33 seconds from Rich King of Hartlepool CC and Harrogate Nova’s Glen Turnbull, whose time of 21-15 was 21 seconds quicker than third-placed Jason Bateman (Team Swift) and Michael Ellerton (SheHair RT).

In other categories, the fastest team with a woman was Jo Scott (Team Swift) and Richard Marsay (Darlington CC) who covered the course in 26-12, while the top road bike duo were the Ferryhill Wheelers pair of John Hewison and Chris Peareth.

For 44-year-old Keith Murray, it was his second open time trial victory of the season having won the Cleveland Wheelers sporting 21 last month, although he placed second in the Burton and District CA two-up 30km event in early Marsh, with Sam being his partner on that occasion too.

“I’m delighted to take the win & I’m really proud of my son Sam,” said Keith. “He’s 16 now and starting to train properly under the guidance of Connor at TrainSharp and I think the penny has dropped that if you put the hard work in the results will come.”

Both Keith and Sam are down to ride solo in the Stockton Wheelers 23 on Sunday, aiming for a weekend double for the Darlington-based dad.

The father and son pairing also rode the Darlington CC two-up 10 last year, when they clocked 22-21 and had to settle for third spot. But with a year’s more training and refining of their technique they managed to go 1-39 quicker.

On that occasion 12 months ago Turnbull and King were joint winners in 21-57, and although they went quicker in the 2019 event they couldn’t top the performance laid down by the Murray duo.
