Joe Laverick

Joe Laverick and Laura Walker were the quickest male and female riders as Barton Wheelers staged a 10-mile time trial in North Lincolnshire on Saturday.

Laverick, the 18-year-old from Grimsby who was riding the Barton Wheelers event is the colours of Cyclism but who road races for the professional Madison Genesis team, clocked 19-51 to win by 1-09 from Richard Sharp (Team Swift).

Sharp’s time of 21-00 was six seconds better than third-placed Daniel Barnett (Team Bottrill), while Bevan Jones (Team Sportslab) was another 18 seconds adrift in fourth spot.

Another Team Bottrill rider, 43-year-old Laura Walker from Kingsclere in Hampshire, clocked 27-07 to win the women’s category.

Matlock CC’s Richard Cordin was victorious in the handicap category with an adjusted time of 18-24, while 16 seconds further back was John Lockham (City RC Hull).

Keith Ainsworth (Sheffrec CC) was fastest veteran on age standard finishing with a plus of 6-07, while Andy Thomas (Lindsay Roads CC) was second.

As well as being fourth overall, Bevan Jones won the espoir prize according to the ‘one rider one prize’ rule as Laverick is also under-23, while Team Sportslab won the team prize with Jones teaming up with Joshua Jones and Jonathan Croft.

The C10/7 course is an anti-clockwise loop. It starts near the A15 at Bonby Lodge and heads south on minor roads before turning east towards Wootton. Before the village they headed back north to the B1206 where they turned west to the finish.

Although impressive, Laverick’s time was not a PB – he clocked 18-50 on the now unused V718 course near South Cave a couple of years ago. He is due to ride the City RC Hull 10 on Good Friday, while he has also entered the Lincolnshire RRA 10 on April 27.

Following his win in the Barton Wheelers 10 on Saturday, he went on to tackle the 100-kilometre Oakenclough Road Race Series round two, where he placed fourth.

This was Laura Walker’s first open win of the season, but she did place fourth in the Northampton and District CA 18.7-mile event two weeks ago.
